Synecdoche
There are presently no open calls for submissions.
Synecdoche, noun: a figure of speech by which a part is put for the whole, the whole for a part, the species for the genus, the genus for the species, or the name of the material for the thing made.
Synecdoche is a national literary arts journal and small press based at Brown University in Providence, RI.
Synecdoche seeks a diverse range of work, from both emerging and established artists, which strives to bridge the chasms between past and present, sight and sound, personal and universal; work that experiments with the possibilities of blurring its own genres. In an age increasingly defined by technology, the opportunities for artists and writers to create have been radically redefined. More and more, digital landscapes are replacing ‘natural’ ones; entire cultures dissolve and are archived online. The internet has bridged the gaps between peoples, cultures, and landscapes, and the resulting cacophony can be liberating, but also at times alienating. In the digital age, how can we form meaningful identities unhinged from the media? Consequently,“art” is often locked away inside the walls of museums and classrooms. Our social, political, and economic institutions have created a dichotomy between the voice of the poet and that of the journalist. We think of art in terms of “genre,” “form,” and “medium;” perhaps, though, the definition of art need not be compartmentalized.
The reading period for our second issue will run from May 1st, 2015- August 31st 2015!
Simultaneous submissions are accepted and encouraged! Just please let us know as soon as possible if your work has been accepted somewhere else. If you are withdrawing one piece of a larger submission, it would greatly help us if you could withdraw the entire submission and then re-submit the work you would like us to consider.
